43 Zoshigaya/雑司ヶ谷

Zoshigaya Cemetery is a public cemetery established in 1874 and operated by Tokyo Municipal Government.  The site area is 115,000 square meters and many personages including Soseki Natsume were buried in the cemetery.

Kishimojin Shrine was established in 1578 on the site and the main hall in the photo was built in 1664.  The shrine was crowded with local people celebrating Shichi-Go-San festival, cerebrating children’s seven, five and three years of age.

Japan Women’s University, the oldest women’s university in Japan, is located within ten-minute walk from Zoshigaya Station.  Below is a photo of the entrance of the university’s student house.  My mother, born and raised in a rural area of Yamagata prefecture (where TV drama character “Oshin” was born), came to Tokyo and lived in the student house from 1959 to 1963.
