Suga Shrine was established at the current place around 1640.  In the Edo period, it was the main shrine of 18 villages in Yotsuya area and its festival held in June every year was one of the five major festivals in Edo.

Going down a steep slope from Suga Shrine is an area which was call “Samegahashi,” one of the three major slums in Tokyo until a hundred years ago. The slum stretched along a small river in the valley between Yotsuya and Shinanomachi. While high-grade apartments are built along the winding road covering the river, there remain narrow alleys of old days.
