Kokuriko-zaka (Coquelicot Hill or Cocreco Hill) is an excavated slope from Otowa-dori avenue to the upland where Ochanomizu University (the top national women’s university) and the Junior and Senior High Schools attached to Tsukuba University are located.  It was named after the animation film “Kokuriko-zaka Kara” (“From Up On Poppy Hill”) of Studio Ghibli.  The original comic published by Kodansha was said to be name after the restaurant Coquelicot in the photo which the author and the editor frequently visited.

On the opposite side of Kokuriko-zaka is another slope from Otowa-dori avenue to the upland where the international student house of Tokyo University is located.  The site was used by the branch hospital of Tokyo University Hospital from 1908 to 2001.  The gate house and the gatepost are reminders of the hospital.
