09 Akihabara/秋葉原

Akihabara was the largest electric goods shopping district in Japan.  After the WWII, many radio set assemblers and radio parts suppliers opened small shops around Akihabara station and the area developed into a home electric appliances market in 1960s.  In 1970s, 10% of home electric appliances sold in Japan were sold to consumers in this area.  Although the number of electric goods stores decreased since 1990s due to the shift to suburban type large stores and EC stores, there are still many electric goods stores in this area, which are popular among foreign tourists.
