54 Jinbocho／神保町

Jinbocho is known as a town of bookstores.  There are more than 100 bookstores, most of which are secondhand bookstores specializing in different fields such as literature, history, science, fine art, manga, magazine, etc.

When I was a high shool student, Sanseido Jinbocho Bookstore and Libro Ikebukuro Bookstore (which was replaced by Sanseido Ikebukuro Bookstore in 2015) were the favorite bookstores.  Sanseido Jinbocho Bookstore was closed in 2022 and a new building (Sanseido’s headquarters) is under construction at the site.

Many publishing companies are located in Jinbocho area.  The headquarters of three major publishing companies, Shogakukan, Shueisha and Iwanami Shoten adjoin each other in this area.

There are many good restaurants in Jinbocho.  My favorites are Kyoeido curry shop (1924-), Sweet Baozi (1955-2020) and Shinsekai Saikan, a Chinese restaurant known for Chinese mitten crab (1946-, photo below).
