Hakusan is a town on the Nakasendo road, one of the five roads in the Edo period.
Hakusan shrine was relocated to the current place in 1655. It is well known for its hydrangea blossoms in June.
Koishikawa Botanical Garden is on the west slope of Hakusan hill. It was the site of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi’s residence before he became the fifth Shogun in 1680 and redeveloped into the Koishikawa Yojyosho, a hospital for poor people and its herb garden, in 1722.
On top of Hakusan hill is a quiet ordinary residential area.
